Atsuko #Sato is the owner of Kabosu, the #ShibaInu dog that inspired the “Doge” meme and the cryptocurrency #Dogecoin.

$Sato, a Japanese kindergarten teacher, adopted Kabosu from an animal shelter in 2008 and lived with her in Chiba prefecture, southeast of Tokyo. In 2010, Sato posted photos of Kabosu on her blog, and one image of the #dog with a curious expression went viral.

The meme combines Kabosu’s image with the popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin, and often features #Kabosu’s face surrounded by rainbow-colored text and broken English phrases. The meme’s usage evolved to include social media users commenting on politics, pop culture, and world events. Kabosu’s face became the logo for Dogecoin, which was originally created as a joke in 2013 but experienced a huge increase in value in 2021.
